And a horse and a donkey, praise be to God for that. As for those who were killed among them, the number killed, as verified by direct observation, was one hundred and fifty-eight. The attack intensified upon us at 10:30 AM. We learned that the advance would be early, heading to Al-Rahda, where strong fortifications would be established, making it a military point due to the abundance of water there, as was said by the knowledgeable ones and by Sheikh Adah, who is one of the sheikhs of the Hayyin Arabs accompanying us. On Wednesday, the blessed 24th of October, 1883, at 1:00 AM, we departed from Wadiya, heading towards Al-Zuhd. After about half an hour of our departure, many proclamations were found within the perimeter of the zariba. These had been placed by the wicked, defiant Arabs during the night. They were at a distance of one hundred to two hundred meters, intending to intimidate us into submitting to Muhammad Ahmad and abandoning our intentions towards them. These mentioned proclamations were gathered from outside the zariba, numbering over a hundred and some. They were brought to His Excellency General Hicks Pasha and His Excellency the Governor-General. After reviewing them, they acknowledged their content. Regarding the strange wording written in them, a literal copy of one of them was made and is included in this book, which is the aforementioned proclamation in its exact wording: (In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to God, the Generous Sovereign, and prayers be upon our master Muhammad and his family, with peace. And thereafter, the humble one, clinging to his Lord, Muhammad Al-Mahdi, son of Sayyid Abdullah, writes to whomever among the expedition hears, and possesses intellect. For there is no fear for one with intellect that the matter is in God's hands, and no rifles, cannons, rockets, or protection for anyone in that, except God's protection. So if you understand this, know that God is One, and do not be deceived by your weapons, nor by what you gather to fight the soldiers of God, for there is no strength in anything without God. And if you say that our Mahdi is written, know that falsehood emanates only from those who love this world, fear creation, and deem God's power insufficient. So if you understand this, do not be deceived by the words of your agents, for the Turks whom you fight have complained to the Truth, the Almighty, saying, "We and our master, the Mahdi, have killed us without warning."
