The fire was in a state of haste as I mentioned. I got out of my tent, determined to leave it, when I felt a shot fired ten meters away from my tent. The bullet fell about three-quarters of a meter from me. It became clear to me that this shot was unintentional, as the shooter must have jumped up in a panic from his sleep, realizing the enemy was outside the enclosure. He quickly loaded his weapon, and by God's grace, a bullet missed him and did not hit me. The only thing that bothered me was the gunpowder smoke when it was fired. I resolved to inform His Excellency Al-Mukdar Effendi and His Excellency Hicks Pasha, so that they would be aware and issue orders not to fire from within the fort, lest it cause confusion inside the fort and lead to unforeseen consequences. Since the tent of His Excellency Al-Mukdar Effendi is adjacent to mine at a distance of ten meters, and the tent of His Excellency Hicks Pasha is also thirteen meters away, it is not permissible under any circumstances to fire near these two leaders, upon whom the stability of this movement depends. It was known for certain that the shooter was one of the servants of His Excellency Qanawi Bey or His Excellency Abd al-Rahman Bey. And lest we forget what we must clarify during this important journey, I say that this blessed night is the blessed night of Eid al-Adha. His Excellency Al-Mukdar Effendi had invited musicians to play music to entertain our great camp. And since it was a blessed night, after we had finished celebrating the first joy, we heard two shots fired at half past two in the Arab time. At that moment, he alerted His Excellency that there was no need to play music on this night, as it was raining heavily, and the soldiers might be drawn to it without paying attention to their digging inside the enclosure, and the enemy might catch us by surprise, as it is customary for the Arabs to seize opportunities at such times. The musicians were then sent away. And by a strange coincidence, less than an hour passed before the enemy's vanguard arrived, and the soldiers attacked us with great understanding. And they fired hellish fire upon them, as mentioned before. We must not forget the favor of His Excellency Al-Mukdar Effendi in alerting His Excellency Abbas Bey, the Kheddar of Toukh, to fire twenty-one cannons at dawn, which is the blessed Eid day, to commemorate this great day.
