Mudathir Ali Al-Bushi and his role in political life.

Mudathir Al-Bushi spent four years at Wad Madani School. In the first year, 1918, he was the only student accepted from that school into Gordon Memorial College. His father's wish was for him to join the students in one year, then open the door for students in the following year, and continue the organization of students in this manner. The prevailing system was to accept students in the year that followed. Mudathir Al-Bushi was informed to enroll in the Engineering department. He and Ismail Al-Azhari entered Gordon College in the same year, after the latter had moved to Omdurman at an earlier time (77). Mudathir Al-Bushi continued to study for a full year in the Engineering department. Mudathir Al-Bushi's father, Sheikh Ali Al-Bushi, had stipulated to the college administration that his son be transferred to the Judiciary department once he completed his year in Engineering. When the year was completed, an administrator named Mr. Simon wrote a letter to the bank manager informing student Mudathir Al-Bushi to return to the Sharia Judiciary department. His relative and friend, Ismail Al-Azhari, went to the Teachers' department (28). Ismail Al-Azhari intended to travel to Egypt to complete his studies at Al-Azhar. Mudathir Al-Bushi recounts an incident that happened to him about traveling to Egypt, saying: "One morning, we were writing official papers, and my brother and friend, student Ismail Al-Azhari, was sitting next to me. Mr. Udall suddenly summoned him. He was gone for a moment, then returned, sweat pouring from his forehead, and anger evident on his face. He said, after they seated him with great distress and pain, 'Mudathir, Mr. Udall has learned that I have made preparations to travel to Egypt and enroll in Al-Azhar University, as you know. This is a lie, and you are mistaken.' He then tried to convince me to abandon this plan. I informed him that it was my father's wish. He said, 'If you agree with me, I will not impose it on you.' I replied, 'But I will not disobey his authority under any circumstances.' Finally, I understood that he had placed obstacles in my path, making it impossible for me to reach Al-Azhar." Mudathir Al-Bushi himself faced this tiring situation from the British administration when he wanted to transfer to the Sharia Judiciary department. Mr. Udall and Mr. Hunt, the Dean of the Engineering College, prevented him and insisted on his refusal, until he insisted on his position and made his decision, which he would not retract (30).
