Regarding his brother, Sayyid Ahmad, son of Ahmad bin Muhammad Uthman, his mother's lineage is Khadija bint Abdullah, from an Eritrean Muslim family. The brothers Ahmad and Ali spent part of their childhood and youth separated from each other. Sayyid Ahmad was confined in Omdurman under the observation of the Mahdist state, while Sayyid Ali was living in Egypt under the care of his uncle Muhammad al-Sir al-Mirghani. The British government stood behind him, providing him and his family members in Suakin, and some successors of the Tariqa, with the necessary aid and support, in recognition of the Mirghanis' esteemed efforts in confronting the Mahdiyya and as compensation for the lands and properties they had lost. Sayyid Ali: Berber, Dongola, Halfa, Khartoum, and Kordofan, with his headquarters in Khartoum Bahri. Sayyida Maryam al-Mirghaniyya: Red Sea Hills, with her headquarters in Sinkat. Due to political and practical circumstances, Sayyid Ali, with the means, talents, and favorable conditions available to him, was always considered the head, leader, and sole representative of the Mirghani family. We have referred to this division before. Sayyid Ali was truly a leader; God bestowed upon him the qualities of an excellent commander who could navigate...
