He pacified the land of clouds. The Zanj had defeated the Mahdi and cut off the road, so in 1873 he sought help from the Sultan of Darfur, but he did not help him. He fought them and was defeated, and ordered their leader Abdullah al-Ta'aishi to be killed by the sheikhs. This Abdullah was the one who became the Mahdi's successor. The Egyptian army fought him, and he fled from Omdurman. The Egyptian army caught him in a place called Jadid on November 24, 1899, and annihilated those with him. As for him and his companions, when they realized their doom, they surrendered and sat waiting for death, which was not far from them, but came quickly.

After the conquest of Kordofan, Zubayr sent to Ismail Pasha Ayoub, the Governor-General of Sudan, asking him to send someone to take over the lands he had conquered. The reply he received was that His Highness the Khedive had granted him the second rank and appointed him to rule those lands in exchange for 15,000 pounds to be paid annually. Then war broke out between him and the Sultan of Darfur, and he was victorious. The sons of the Sultans of Darfur were sent to Egypt. Then a dispute arose between the Governor-General of Sudan and Zubayr, so he returned to Egypt in 1875 and accompanied the Egyptian army in the war with Russia. During that time, his son Sulayman revolted against the government, so Gordon sent Jibi Pasha to fight him, and Sulayman was killed. In 1883, he was appointed to fight a rebel named Dafna in Mayukr. After gathering thousands of Sudanese in Egypt, he refused to be under the command of Baker Pasha. In 1884, Gordon summoned him to take over the Sudanese lands, as mentioned, but he refused, because the English had entrusted him as a trusted man. In 1885, he was sent to Jebel Tariq on charges of corresponding with the Mahdi, where he remained for 30 months. Then he was released, and the government appointed him a monthly salary of 289 pounds, which he received until his death. He was claiming one million pounds from them. After the restoration of Sudan, many of his properties were returned to him.
