They neglect to acquire understanding and do not seek to gain their inclination. The harmed party attributes to them the call for national or religious unity, either openly or secretly, to absolve them of political responsibility. Thirdly, Islamic unity necessitates striving to reform Islam in an Islamic manner. In other words, it means striving in the twentieth century to revive principles established a thousand years ago as guidance for a social life in a state of nature and moderation. Some of these principles distinguish slavery, and others include customs and laws regarding the relationships between men and women, which are contrary to the views of people in this era. And it includes something of all of that, which is to cast civil, criminal, and financial laws into a single mold that cannot be changed or altered. This is what has hindered the progress of countries whose people follow the religion of Islam. For these reasons, and regardless of all political considerations, those concerned with the reform of Egypt find it necessary to denounce the call for Islamic unity. The utmost care must also be taken to overlook any natural inclination towards national unity, lest it lead us astray without the intention of its proponent. This movement – the movement of Islamic unity – is one of the greatest intellectual movements, and we should not be inclined towards it. For it may be easy for a person to be deceived by the call for Islamic unity if The movement of Islamic unity is another movement that may be prevented from being called a national movement, as the two movements are distinct such that it is not easy for a person to identify one and attribute the other to it. But I am convinced that the movement of Islamic unity is the stronger of the two movements. However that may be, I will search for the national movement, regardless of any real or imagined connection to the movement of Islamic unity, and I will say: If the idea of Egyptian national unity has brought joy and flourished, it is because it is in accordance with nature. As for what is called the National Party, there is little doubt that they do not represent themselves as the party they claim to be. We do not understand, and as they told me, this party consists only of a few individuals who reject the great and the loud. Their motive for doing what they do is not commendable, and they do not have any desire for their homeland or their true aspirations. I believe what was told to me is true. In any case, it is said with confidence that this party does not grasp the consequences that result from its statements or the possibility of turning its words into action immediately, except with a very limited understanding.
