and the prohibition and the direction of affairs." The most obedient of people to him was the amir of Lamtuna, Abu Zakariya Yahya ibn Umar. When the amir Abu Zakariya advanced with his army, he would place Sheikh Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Yasin before him. The Sheikh was, in reality, the amir. He was the one who provided security and guidance. Al-Bakri depicted this spiritual control of the faqih Ibn Yasin by saying: "Yahya ibn Umar was the one who saved the people, saving Abdullah ibn Yasin and making him great. And it is said that Abdullah said to him on one of those expeditions: 'O amir, you have a right to discipline me.' Yahya said to him: 'You are the one who is in charge, and I am your servant, and I am your slave.' Abdullah said to him: 'The amir does not enter combat himself, because his life is the life of his army, and his destruction is their destruction.'"
The jihad of the faqih Ibn Yasin continued, as did his intellectual and spiritual guidance to his followers who joined the Lamtuna tribe after the initial efforts of his brother Abu Bakr, until he was martyred in one of his battles with the Barghawata.
The one who fulfilled Ibn Yasin's aspirations in establishing a state that would realize the reformist visions he had laid out was Yusuf ibn Tashfin (died 500 AH / 1106 CE). He inherited the spiritual authority of Ibn Yasin and the military authority of Abu Bakr, and thus the Almoravid state emerged, enabling it to hold leadership and administration in the Maghreb and Al-Andalus. "It was the faqih Abdullah ibn Yasin who unified their affairs and established the tenets of Islam among them."
