Ibn Taymiyyah said: "For indeed, the ignorant are of two types: those who are ignorant and do not know, and those who are ignorant and deny. As Allah Almighty said: 'And those who have been given knowledge see that which has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, and it guides to the path of the Almighty.' And He said: 'Or do you intend to ask your Messenger as Moses was asked before? And whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.' And Allah Almighty said: 'And Allah sends down His signs that He may make clear to you, and Allah is Knowing and Wise.' For the ignorant who deny are those who have not grasped it. As for those who are ignorant and do not know, they are negligent. As Allah Almighty said: 'Rather, they have denied what they do not encompass of knowledge, while its interpretation has not yet come to them. Thus were those who were before them denied.' So the denial of the former was due to two matters: the first is that they saw the truth but did not understand it, and did not follow its guidance. Guidance is what the ignorant grasp with certainty and understanding. The second is that the truth did not appear before their eyes, and this is the path of denial. Ibn Taymiyyah said: 'People are more inclined to what benefits them and deny what harms them, and more inclined to what they affirm and believe in. And thus Allah Almighty said: 'Rather, they have denied what they do not encompass of knowledge, while its interpretation has not yet come to them.' And for this reason, the scholars sufficed with the evidence of the ignorant without presenting their proofs: 'Say, 'Believe in it or do not believe. Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it, when it is recited to them, fall down upon their faces in prostration.' And what do you see from those who attributed their Islam to the Messenger? Their strength, but as it is said: 'Your strength is your strength.' So Warqa ibn Nawfal and Ubayd Allah ibn Jahsh, and Salman al-Farisi! And for this reason, the Imam al-Mahdi appeared at the time of his pledge of allegiance with the ignorant."
