Then, after that, he supports the disbelievers and aids them against the Muslims, seeking their high status and victory; so that he may gain worldly benefit from them, while knowing what this support entails in terms of the triumph of polytheism and disbelief over faith and Islam. And that whenever a person commits this great calamity, it is due to the dominance of the love of this world over his soul and heart, to the extent that it has removed him from the original faith that saves, and which entails the principle of loyalty and disavowal. Thus, he becomes (a disbeliever) because of it, and we seek refuge in Allah. Allah the Almighty said: "O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are allies of one another. And whoever allies himself with them is from them. Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people." [Surah Al-Ma'idah: 51].

Al-Tabari said in the interpretation of this verse: "The correct opinion in this matter, in our view, is to say: Allah - the Almighty - has forbidden all believers from taking Jews and Christians as supporters and allies against the believers in Allah and His Messenger. And He informed that whoever takes them as a supporter, ally, and guardian instead of Allah and His Messenger and the believers, then he is from them in his partisanship against Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, and that Allah and His Messenger are innocent of him."

However, a Muslim may refrain from declaring the doer of disbelief as a disbeliever, but he does not approve of his disbelief, nor does he follow him in it.

It is narrated from Umm Salamah - may Allah be pleased with her - that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There will be appointed over you rulers, whom you will recognize and whose actions you will deny. So whoever denies [their actions] has absolved himself, and whoever disapproves has been saved. But whoever approves and follows [them]..." (Narrated by Muslim).
