Al-Khatm or Al-Qutbiyyah The Sufis concluded that for every era there is a Qutb or Ghawth, through whom the world revolves. He is called the Master of the Time, and he who holds the highest rank in sainthood. After him come the Awtad, then the Nujaba, then the Abdal. Each of these has a mission and a station. The Khatm is the one who occupies the highest station in sainthood. The Khatim is the seal of the saints. This is the view of Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi and Ali bin Muhammad bin Wugha. Muhammad Uthman al-Mirghani alluded to them, took from them, and was influenced by their writings. However, his views on the Khatm did not take a philosophical turn, but rather he presented them as mere statements, as they are.

Al-Mirghani alluded to the sayings of these two men in his book Al-Nafahat al-Makkiyyah. Sayyid Ja'far presents what he calls the "good tidings of the Khatm," saying: "This is a treatise on some of the addresses to the Khatm, may God be pleased with him. And I mean by the Khatm the one whose station is below the station of the Mahdi, above whom there is no saint except the awaited Mahdi... Among his addresses, to which he was addressed, the Khatm said: I was told that whoever accompanies you will die in sainthood. The Khatm said: I was told that whoever greets you, his sins will fall away. The Khatm said: I was told that your station is the intercession with the Prophet, Fatima, Al-Hasan, Al-Husayn, and the Mahdi, and the sixth. No one is with you in it by dwelling, and whoever enters it other than you enters it only for visitation. The Khatm said: I was told that the meaning of the Khatm is of four types: First: The Prophetic Seal. Second: The Mahdi Seal. Third: My Seal. Fourth: The Seal beyond which there is no saint, and it is at the end of time. From this, I learned my status. The Khatm said: I was told that no one among the knowing saints has been able to comprehend your reality, and how many great scholars have tried to know your reality and failed. The greatest among them in knowledge is Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi... The Khatm said: I was told that you have a chair around the Throne after the chair of the Mahdi. Most of these good tidings are for me and not for the Mahdi. The Khatm said: I was told that if there had been a prophet after the Prophet, it would have been only you and the Mahdi. The Khatm said: I was told that all the saints wish for your station. The Khatm said: It was said to the Ghawth of the Ghawths, do you know anyone more perfect than you? And he pointed to my image and the image of the Mahdi."

Thus, Al-Khatm Al-Mirghani elaborates on his status and clarifies his position among the saints and the place he occupies.
