Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask for the cause of his being blessed, and ask for peace upon him in abundance. The mention of reward and the mention of the actions of the righteous and their striving for them is higher than the mention of Allah and His angels sending blessings upon him. And it is higher than what preceded it because of the occurrence of prayer upon him, and the intention of emulation or conformity in a manner of love and veneration. Then, it has degrees, the highest of which is what is transmitted, then the sound hadith, then the weak. It also has degrees, and the transmitted is also the greatest and most magnificent. The words of Allah, and whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and whatever is between them, and whatever is beneath the earth, and whatever is in the four directions, are also in the remembrance of Allah. So, O author, you have preceded the Muslims, may Allah be pleased with them, by saying: "There is no god but He, the Living, the Self-Subsisting." These are the comprehensive attributes of uniqueness and absolute self-sufficiency, and the power and loftiness of status from the perceptions of the senses, and the firm resolve that is free from any need, and the greatness that is beyond comprehension, and the majesty that is beyond description, and the perfection that is free from all deficiency, and the knowledge and power, and all the attributes of perfection. And if you ask, "What is its like?" then there is nothing like it. "He is the Living, and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet." The phrase "send blessings" is connected to "He is the Living," meaning that Allah sends blessings, and the angels send blessings. It is connected to "and ask for peace upon him in abundance." And Muhammad, the servant of Allah, is distinguished by absolute prophethood and guidance, so there is no partner for him in this, nor in what is derived from it. The definite article "al-" refers to the mental definite article, meaning the present Prophet among his people. And from Anas bin Malik, he said: "This is the remembrance that Allah, the Exalted, honored the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with by saying: 'Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet.'" This is a greater honor than honoring Adam, peace be upon him, for it is not permissible for Allah to be with the angels in this honor. Thus, an honor that comes from Him is more eloquent than an honor bestowed by the angels. And Abu Al-Thalath Al-Qandiri said: "If you want to know that sending blessings upon the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is superior to all acts of worship, then look at this verse: 'Indeed, Allah commands justice, good conduct and giving to relatives, and He forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you, that perhaps you will remember.' (16:90). Allah commanded His servants to do all acts of worship, and He Himself, and His angels, sent blessings upon the Prophet, and commanded the believers to send blessings upon him. The precedence of informing of Allah's sending blessings upon him and His angels upon him is a sign of what we have mentioned about emulation and following. That is, if your Lord does this, then emulate Him and send blessings upon him. And also, the greatness of his status, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the abundance of his need for Allah and His angels to send blessings upon him, means that the blessings of others are not sufficient for him, and the help of Allah is sufficient. And the one who is emulated is naturally superior. And the people of the Arabic language also use "inna" for emphasis, and the verb "yusalluna" is in the present tense to indicate continuity. This is a virtue that is not found elsewhere. It is greater than the angels' prostration to Adam, which was a single act and then ceased. The meaning of "salat" is mercy and pleasure from Allah, the Exalted, and supplication from the angels and people. And the prayer of Allah is His forgiveness, and the prayer of the angels is their supplication for forgiveness.
