- 74 -The number of people treated in the dispensaries of this society was about 29,000 in the year 1910. The work of these two societies is to accept mothers and children, treat them, and teach mothers care and cleanliness by example and practice.
« 39» - Drinking Water in Cairo The reasons that led the Egyptian government to return to drawing drinking water for Cairo from the Nile in March 1910, and then the agreement between the government and the Cairo Water Company, were detailed in last year's report. Work is underway to establish the necessary structures, and the filters must be delivered in May. The purification of the Nile with dredgers will soon begin in preparation for laying the two old large pipes that will take water from it. All equipment is expected to be ready for operation before the end of the year. It is worth mentioning that the method used is the same as that used in Alexandria for several years, with improvements. It has yielded excellent results there without any cost.
« 40» - Malaria and Mosquitoes Mosquito control in Cairo continued throughout the year. It is worth noting that the purpose is not to combat malaria, as it cannot be said that malaria exists in Cairo. The measures taken are aimed at reducing mosquitoes known as Culex and Sitomya, which do not transmit malaria. The solution to the problem in Cairo lies in the entire drainage system, which requires the removal of all stagnant wells where these insects breed and the elevation of low-lying areas where Nile water can seep. As for mosquito control in Suez, it is a campaign against malaria. The Irrigation Department has undertaken measures to drain water in some areas of the swamps. The control of Anopheles mosquitoes is proceeding with vigor and activity and is meeting with success.
« 41» - Public Health Defense The Egyptian territory in the latter half of 1910 was exposed to a cholera outbreak. After failing in Russia for three consecutive years, sometimes intensifying and sometimes subsiding, its severity suddenly increased in the countries on the Black Sea coast. The situation continued in this manner in August, and it also appeared in the southern Italian provinces, Constantinople, and Izmir, reaching the western borders of Egypt.
