Between brevity and lengthiness, Al-Qata reveals its problems and beauties through interpretation and detail. Many scholars from the East and West have explained the Maqamat of Al-Hariri, whose names are mentioned by Haji Khalifa in his book titled Kashf al-Zunun 'an Asami al-Kutub wa al-Funun. Among their works that reached this point are four commentaries: 1. Ghareeb al-Idah fi Ghareeb al-Maqamat al-Haririyyah by Imam Burhan al-Din Abi al-Fath Nasr ibn Abd al-Sayyid al-Mutarrizi al-Khwarizmi, who passed away in 610 AH. This commentary, despite its conciseness, is a useful book that achieves its purpose. Al-Mutarrizi had complete knowledge of grammar, language, poetry, and various literary forms. He is the author of the book al-Maghrib, in which he discussed the obscure words used by jurists.

2. Sharh Ma Ghadh min al-Alfadh al-Lughawiyyah min al-Maqamat al-Haririyyah by Sheikh Muhibb al-Din Abd Allah ibn al-Husayn al-Makbari al-Baghdadi, who passed away in 610 AH. He said, "I saw the Maqamat of Al-Hariri filled with linguistic terms, and it is one of the books that Arabic scholars have focused on. This prompted me to explain its obscure words concisely. I had previously provided some of this to certain people, but they elaborated excessively on what was unnecessary and misinterpreted the intended meaning of its words.

3. Sharh al-Maqamat by the linguist and grammarian Abu al-Mayyas Ahmad ibn Abd al-Mu'min ibn Musa al-Qaysi al-Sharnshi, who passed away in 619 AH. This is a lengthy commentary. Al-Sharishi mentioned that he extracted every benefit from the commentaries on the Maqamat, incorporated every advantage, explained every nuance, and highlighted every rarity. His commentary is considered a definitive work on the Maqamat, superseding all previous commentaries. He does not deviate from any of its words or meanings. He also took a significant amount from the commentary of Ibn Zafar.
