The parliamentary procedures followed in such cases proceeded as usual. The Prime Minister submitted his resignation to the Governor-General, and it was accepted. The Governor-General then requested the Parliament to elect a new Prime Minister. On November 15, 1955, Parliament convened to elect the new Prime Minister. The candidates were Sayyid Ismail al-Azhari of the National Unionist Party and Sayyid Mirghani Hamza of the Opposition Parties Front. This time, Sayyid al-Azhari won the presidency by a majority of 49 to 45 votes, thus the Unionist Party remained in power once again.

The Meeting of the Two Sayyids Efforts were united to rally the Sudanese and unify their ranks after numerous contacts made here and there, a significant political event in the history of this critical period. The two esteemed Sayyids, Imam Abd al-Rahman al-Mahdi and Sayyid Ali al-Mirghani, met in a spirit of friendship and cooperation for the first time since the British and Egyptians entered Sudan as conquerors in 1898. On December 3, 1955, the two Sayyids issued the following statement: "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Now that God has willed the fulfillment of the great hope that the country has been striving for since we met and reconciled, seeking the pleasure of God and the homeland. We are pleased to announce our determination to stand together for what will bring goodness, happiness, freedom, and complete sovereignty to the noble Sudanese nation. As we are keen for the country to pass through this critical stage with reassurance and peace towards its hoped-for great destiny, we call upon all citizens to forget themselves in the service of their beloved homeland and the realization of its great aspirations, so that the stability and reassurance necessary in this difficult circumstance may be achieved. We hope that this will create a suitable atmosphere for the cooperation of all our loved ones and supporters in righteousness, piety, and the common good. We also hope that the meeting of all parties will enable the immediate formation of a national government that will be the safeguard for all this and capable of saving the country from any foreseeable danger."
