And if I wished to add more evidence, I would bring a great deal of it, but what I have mentioned is sufficient for the intended purpose. So, when what we have presented becomes clear, I will proceed to describe the current Egyptian national movement as it appears from what is within my ability, and I will also explain my personal opinion on how it should be treated. So I say: If we say that the current Egyptian national movement is nothing but a movement towards Islamic unity, our statement would not conform to reality in every respect, but there is no doubt that this movement is strongly colored with the formula of Islamic unity. And this matter has been known to me for a long time, and many Europeans have also known it, as appears from what is published in the local newspapers, but their knowledge of it has been much slower. And it is easy for me to provide many examples and evidence for the correctness of this statement if the matter requires their presentation (1). But I say now that the events that occurred last summer have revealed a new era of elements of the Egyptian situation. Because, even if one accepts as undoubtedly true that religion is the greatest driving force in the East (2), and that Easterners are not moved by a government like a theocratic government (3), it would still have been surprising for him to see the Egyptians remembering what befell them in the past and considering the progress of their country in wealth and prosperity at present as very great progress compared to the neighboring Ottoman provinces, which would prevent the growth of Islamic unity in their country more than it apparently did. And I said "apparently" because, despite all appearances, I am not convinced that the inclination towards Islamic unity is deeply rooted in the Egyptian social fabric. Rather, I am confident that if the Egyptians believed in the possibility of bringing the ideas related to that unity from theory into practice, public opinion would have turned against it with a great and rapid reversal.
