Kordofan. After the Egyptians took Sennar, Prince Ismail, the Defterdar, was sent to conquer Kordofan and Darfur. The Sultan of Darfur sent a commander to gather seventy thousand fighters from Darfur to fight the Egyptians. The Defterdar and his men were met with heavy fire, and they were defeated. They fled, and many thought that God had sent thunder and lightning to fight them alongside the Egyptians. They began to repeat the verse, "And thunder extols His praise, and the angels, in awe of Him." The Defterdar took Kordofan and prepared to march on Darfur. Prince Ismail was surprised in Shandi, so he abandoned the march and headed for Shandi, the scene of the incident, which occurred in the middle of the year 1231 AH.

The Killing of Prince Ismail Pasha. After completing the conquest of the city of Sennar and declaring its annexation to the Egyptian Khedivate, the Prince returned to Shandi to gather funds for the completion of the conquest of Northern Sudan. He stayed as a guest with the leader of Shandi, Al-Malik Nimr. Here, I must inform the reader of a fact that I deem it my duty to report. The accounts differ in explaining the reason for the killing of Prince Ismail Pasha by Al-Malik Nimr. Some narrated that the Prince saw a woman who was the sister of this leader and asked her to be his concubine. He jokingly asked for a hundred like her. He did not consider this a joke, but thought that the Prince intended to insult him. So, he plotted against him and carried out his scheme, which you will see in this context.
