And what they relied upon of great matters and great fears, and what they endured of desolate lands, and what they distanced themselves from of journeys, and what they encountered of horrors, and what they suffered of difficult circumstances, and what they were tested with of character and lessons, and deliverance after hardship, so that it may be a clear admonition and a lesson for those with experience, and a strange story in the examples. And let the listener know that everything good and evil has its time, and that neither numbers nor preparations are of avail, but only God, Glorified be His Majesty, is the doer of what He wills. He returned the narrative. And on the twenty-fifth day of Shawwal, the meeting took place at Al-Kawa, and what was prepared from the land of Bani Rashid. So the Commander of the Muslims, may God strengthen him, advanced with his cavalry, striking with their lances, and faced the enemy's ranks, neither hesitant nor weary. When the fire of battle flared up and the two parties mingled in the darkness of the fray, and the stars of the heavens shone, the Banu Amer, who were with the Caliph at Al-Bariṭal and his companions, betrayed them and turned with the enemy against him. So they defeated him, and he was surrounded, and the Commander of the Muslims was prevented from striking with what he had prepared for himself of wealth, provisions, family, and children. And he was surrounded, may God strengthen him, so he escaped, and his son, the high prince Abu Tashfin, may God grant religion and glory to him, fought the enemy and struck the Kurds, and his successor was wounded, and the hands of the prisoners were cut off.
