Then he sacrificed an animal and spoke with the notables about dismissing Ya'qub Bey, urging him to carry out his command because his strength had weakened, and in his place would be Muhammad Khuja, who had been among the bearers of the envoy to the Jazair. It was agreed upon, and Ya'qub Bey was dismissed and replaced in charge of the city. Then he strengthened himself with the people, ruling justly and using the auxiliary forces and the people in his judgments. He was trustworthy, a master, a lover of scholars, and honored them. He was descended from al-Faqar Pasha al-Sharāb and others. His reign began on Sunday, the sixth of Rabi' al-Awwal 1107. On the third of Rabi' of the year, Muhammad Bey marched his army to 'Ayn Makhalah to fight him. He sent an army to al-Jamm, who descended to Fajasī. He ascended the mountain with his army and subdued its people with force. He marched to al-Jarīd, collected its taxes, and returned to al-Ḥufayrah in the month of Ramadan. Then the army marched in the year 1108. He saw the taxes and stayed in Ma'jinah. The illness began, which afflicted him greatly. He entered al-Ḥufayrah for a quarter of Safar remaining, sick. His illness continued to increase until he died on the night of Monday, the seventeenth of Rabi' al-Awwal of the year. He was prayed for in Maḥmā al-Qaṣbah and buried in the tomb of his grandfather. The people grieved greatly for his death and wept until their eyes were blinded by his absence. May God Almighty have mercy on him.
