Algiers. And the Sultan Salman resolved the issue reasonably by mediating between the Turks and the Arabs. But the people of Tamsan migrated en masse to Morocco, so no subjects remained except for a few who returned years later. This situation illustrates the instability that the Oran region was experiencing. In Algeria, Mostaganem, the land of Ibn al-Sinnusi, is not far from Oran. And Tamsan was affected by these events. Did the reasons for Ibn al-Sinnusi's journey stem from these events? We cannot be certain about this matter.
Another point is that the Turks were hostile to the Darqawiyya, and historians agree that Ibn al-Sinnusi was a Darqawi. However, they do not mention when he joined this Sufi order, whether before or after his journey to Fez. If it was before that journey, he might have chosen to travel from his homeland when the aforementioned events occurred.
In Fez Ibn al-Sinnusi arrived in Fez and settled there for a period. Fez was a destination for scholars and a meeting place for the learned. They gathered in its famous mosque, Al-Qarawiyyin, which is considered the oldest university in the world. It was founded in the third Hijri century (933 AD) during the era of the Idrisids, and its construction was initiated by Fatima bint Muhammad al-Fihri. The university took its name from the shortened name of the people of Kairouan, which was applied to the western part of Fez where the mosque was built. This was because it was the headquarters of the emigrants from Kairouan, and people became accustomed to calling them "Qarawiyyin" as a shortened form. Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque continued to be a center of learning for many centuries, with interruptions. It was built in a madrasa whose foundation stone was laid to be a house of study. From its first day, jurists have been active in it. The mosque has been renovated three times.
