43 (2) The Committee would point out that only 36,000 Sudan people, or say 5,000 boys of school age, speak languages of this group, and that far greater numbers are in the Congo and in Uganda.

In Uganda Swahili will become the medium of instruction in Klementary Vernacular Schools, in the Congo the question is yet to be determined, but most of the Congo tribes have recently been transferred to the Ituri district and presumably will adopt Swahili.

On the other hand, for many years in Uganda and the Congo elementary education will take place in the vernacular, and by such time as the transition to Swahili takes place, the standard in the sub-grade schools will so be raised that they will be using the elementary books in Madi.

The Committee are advised by Monsignor Zambonardi that from the Sudan point of view the Madi of Moyo, Uganda is a purer form than the Opari Madi, and accordingly wishes this to be adopted for educational purposes in the Sudan.
