The position is as in Yambio. Nothing but Zande is of any importance and the minor languages of the district (Pombia, Barambo, Baré, and Huma) are disappearing.

Raffle, Italian Catholic Mission.

The people of this district are called Bor. This is the tribe usually referred to as Bolanda and their language is of the Shilluk type.

At present the Mission uses the Bor dialect, in which books have been published (Catechism, Primer, Reader, etc.). On linguistic grounds these people might use a Shilluk group language, but on administrative and cultural grounds it is proposed that they should eventually be absorbed in the Zande group. The administrative point of view, as put forward by Major Brock, is that in future there should only be two languages in the Bahr el Ghazal Province, viz. Dinka and Zande, and that the addition of Shilluk for the purposes of a single unimportant tribe would introduce an unnecessary complication. Moreover, as the Mission concerned with this tribe belongs to a different organization from those interested in Shilluk, it would have considerable difficulty in arranging for the teaching of Shilluk. It is further pointed out that the Bor (Bolanda) whose original home is in Tembura District whence they migrated not very long ago, are in cultural contact with the Zande and would not have any objection to the Zande language, and that on the other hand, they have no intercourse with the Shilluk speaking tribes.

‘There are also in the district served by this Mission some 1,000 Bongo who have a language of their own. There would be no difficulty in bringing these under either of the two group languages (Zande or Dinka) proposed for the Bahr el Ghazal Province.

Kayango, Italian Catholic Mission.

This Mission is attended by Ndogo, Baré, Kreish, Biri, and Golo. Ndogo is the language of instruction and is readily understood by the Baré.

' Mboro, Italian Catholic Mission.

The position is as at Kayango.

Cleveland, Italian Catholic Mission.

The people served by this Mission are mainly Luo (Jur) though there are some Bolanda (Bor). The language used is Luo (Jur), which presents no difficulty to the Bolanda.

Derm Zubeir, Italian Catholic Mission.

This station originally used Ndogo as the language of instruction, but as this was found inadequate it is beginning now to introduce Kreish and Banda.

Kajok, Italian Catholic Mission.

This is a Dinka area and does not concern the present Committee.
