The Committee does not recommend the use of tone marks except when necessary to distinguish the meaning.

The Committee feels that in the interests of uniformity the signs adopted where letters of the Roman alphabet do not exist, should if possible be the same as are adopted in the other languages dealt with by the Conference.

(1) The Committee considered the list of languages and dialects and completed and corrected the information contained therein with reference to Zande and Mundu.

Questions relating to the Ndogo group and to the languages of the Western District enumerated under numbers 16 to 23 were referred to Father Olivetti, who contributed valuable information. Other points involving corrections of the list emerged in the course of the discussion with regard to item two of the terms of reference.

The information thus obtained is embodied in Appendix *B”’. The Committee found itself unable to identify and classify certain of the languages of the Western District and of Rumbek District.

(2) The questions forming number two of the terms of reference were considered from the point of view of each of the Mission stations represented with the following results.

Merrdi, Church Missionary Society.

The pre-dominant language is Zande. There are some 13,000 Baka in the District, amongst whom the use of Zande is spreading, and it is not proposed to use any language but Zande for educational purposes.

Yambio, Church Missionary Society.

In the district served by this station only Zande isspoken. Bukuru, the language of a very small tribe, has died out.
