The reason for their preference for the ni is that it is already being used by the majority of the Committee.

(4) The vowels a, e, i, 0, u, shall have the Italian values. The Committee does not consider that a distinction between different sounds of these vowels is necessary in this group, with the exception of the special sound between o and a, known as “central vowel”’. This shall be represented by 6, which method has the advantage that it can be easily dropped when the elementary stages of leaming are completed.

In the event of further distinctions being made the Ghmititce prefers the underlining of the vowel to the adoption of new symbols.

(7) Long or doubled sounds shall be represented by doubling the vowel or consonant. -N.B.—Diphthongs should be used at the discretion of the translator.
