They are a great blemish on Islam. There is no greater blemish in this western region."

However, we will still try to discern their views through what has been attributed to them, proceeding with caution.

Among their beliefs related to doctrine: First - Belief in the Imamate of Ibn Tumart and his Mahdiship, and the interpretation of the hadiths concerning guidance, waiting until it applies to him, and excommunicating whoever does not believe in him. This doctrine is well-known. And it is the basis for their ancestors remaining a distinct sect.

Second - Preferring the Mahdi over Abu Bakr and Umar. And it is likely that this is an addition by their opponents, because the preference of Abu Bakr and Umar is documented in the Mahdi's own writings and what was followed by his successors.

Third - Excommunicating the Muslims and refusing to eat their slaughtered animals and pray behind their successors. This is something we do not find a basis for in the Mahdi's teachings. And it is not unlikely that this arose within this sect due to what they faced from their social environment of belittlement and oppression, which drove them to extremism in issuing judgments against opposing parties and seeking separation from them.
