The campaign was defeated as follows (1): "On the morning of Monday, the third of Muharram, the Dervishes ceased firing, and after sunrise, the Mahdi mounted and summoned Emir Abd al-Rahman al-Nujumi with his cavalry and men. He ordered an attack on the campaign from the south. He ordered Uqob, the Emir of the Blue Banner, to attack from the northeast, and Musa Halawi, the Emir of the Green Banner, to attack from the southwest. They all attacked and devastated the soldiers. Hicks kept shouting at the top of his voice, saying, 'Take me prisoner!' A horseman immediately speared him. And thus 'was the destruction of General Hicks's campaign'." One of the results of the defeat was that Sultan Pasha, the ruler of Darfur, was forced to surrender without resistance. This happened on December 23, 1883.
