I was concerned about seeking a livelihood and the distress of my heart due to lack of means. When I heard that a caravan had arrived from the lands of Sudan, from Darfur, and before that, I had heard that my father had gone from Sennar to there with his brother. When the Jallaba agency was mobilized, I headed there to inquire about his people and to see if anyone had heard of him. By chance, I met two men from the caravan, men of dignity and respect, who were with Sayyid Ahmad al-Badawi. I kissed his hand and stood before him with humility. He asked me eagerly, "What do you want?" I said, "I am inquiring about a missing man and your country, perhaps someone among you knows him and can guide me to him." He asked, "Who is he and what is his name?" I replied, "His name is Sayyid Omar al-Tunisi, and he is a man of learning." He said, "You have come to the right place! He is my friend, and I know him best. I see a resemblance to him in you. Are you his son?" I said, "I am he, though my condition has changed and my appearance altered." He said, "My son, what is preventing you from joining your father to see him and find what will please you?" I said, "My lack of resources and my limited means." He said, "Your father is one of the most esteemed men by the Sultan and the most honored by him, above all the officials. If you wish to go to him, I will provide for your expenses, your transport, and your comfort until you reach him and meet him." I said, "What you say is true." He said, "Yes, by the life of the Messenger! Your father did me a favor, and I am able to repay him."
