The esteemed Sayyid Sulayman al-Azhari, possessor of numerous beneficial advice, was Sayyid Ahmad, a learned, virtuous, trustworthy, and authoritative scholar in tradition. The position of Qadi in Tawiser was offered to him, but he refused it, being occupied with teaching. He was diligent in his teaching duties and excelled in his early studies. He adhered to them and in his later years was afflicted with a malady that blinded him. He would then deliver lessons in his home, attended by the most prominent students of knowledge and scholars. He remained thus until my father grew up and reached manhood. He had memorized the Quran and attended some lessons in knowledge under his maternal uncle and others. While he was in this state, his longing for travel was stirred. He consulted his maternal uncle, and they decided to travel. So, he also prepared for the journey, and they set sail from Tunis to Alexandria, and from there to al-Qasr. This was a few months before the... As he was traveling with the caravan, a caravan coming from Sinnar approached. A man called out, "O travelers, is there anyone from Tunis among you?" He replied, "Yes, we are." He asked, "Do you know Sayyid Ahmad bin Sulayman?" He replied, "Yes." He said, "And who are you?" He said, "I am a relative of Ahmad. I left Tunis some time ago and left my children and family. I am concerned about whether they are alive or dead." The man was wearing a veil over his face. He heard all this and said to him, "Go to your father. Write to him. My father sends his greetings to his father and kisses his hand."
