(Appendix No. 1) (A letter from the Mahdi to Muhammad Osman bin Muhammad Al-Hasan Al-Mirghani) In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah. To the noble governor, and prayers and peace be upon our master Muhammad and his family.
To proceed: From the servant in need of Allah, Muhammad Al-Mahdi bin Abdullah, to his beloved in Allah, Muhammad Osman bin Muhammad Al-Hasan Al-Mirghani, may his master be pleased with him.
After this: May abundant peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you and upon those in your household. It has been repeatedly communicated to the servants of Allah, calling them to Allah, to turn to what is with Him, to uphold His command, to submit to Him, and to abandon the self and hindering attachments. Whoever is sincere to Allah and makes his affairs for Allah has connected with the religion of Allah through us. And whoever does not unite and uphold the command of Allah with the intention of assisting us and enduring hardships due to the purity of his heart in preferring what is with Allah, then he is from us and with us, even if he dies on that. He is worthy of connecting with his Lord and enjoying there indescribable, everlasting bliss, and resting from the suffering of this world. We have written to you privately more than once, out of consideration for your position, compassion for you, and in anticipation of your well-being. Yet, you have not responded to us, nor have you migrated for the sake of Allah, nor has any action been taken by you in your region except for the payment of Zakat. I do not know what prevents you from this, especially since you are more deserving of joy in us and our response and supporting the religion of Allah than anyone else. What has delayed you until you have missed the years, and you are the knowledgeable ones, the most deserving of honor and position, and the people of understanding, about whom Allah said: "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Those who remember Allah while standing and sitting and lying on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], 'Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You! Then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.' Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire – You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers. Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' so we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins and remove from us our evil deeds and cause us to die with the righteous." You are among the greatest who are counted and expected to have friendship and sincerity to Allah in such a matter. I did not expect you to be so slow, as you are well aware of the greatness of what is with Allah, the baseness of this world and what is in it, and the obligation of migration. It is not hidden from anyone who is below you that the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, is reviving what has faded of the religion and manifesting the traces of the prophets. It is known that the Mahdiya is a test for whoever claims religion. So, whoever has pure religion for Allah...
