THE EGYPTIAN SUDAN away, and near the taller of two royal figures are cut the cartouches of Usertsen III. and of Thothmes III., side by side, thus : ;' O U o IP /VWNAA ;' o I _ Ml , USERTSEN III. AND THOTHMES III. AT GEBEL DOSHA.

Although very few remains of buildings inscribed with the name of Thothmes III. have been found in the country to the south of Gebel Dosha, it is tolerably certain that this king built a temple at Sulb, and that he erected forts all the way along to the head of the Third Cataract. We know that Thothmes I. made the natives build him a fort near the Cataract of Tangur, and it is unlikely that the able and vigorous officers of Thothmes III. would relax their hold upon any site which was essential for the protection of those engaged in bringing the tribute of the SOdan to Egypt.
