TRAVELS OF BURCKHARDT Aswan on February 22nd ; the governor of that town provided him with a guide as far as Derr, which he reached in four days, and which is about one hundred and forty miles to the south of Philae. Some hfteen miles to the north of Korosko he met Mr. Legh and his companion, the Rev. Charles Smelt, who, as we have already seen, had visited Ibrim. Three days more brought him to the Second Cataract above VVadi Haifa, and, travelling through the rocky desert called Batn al-Hagar, i.e., " Stone Belly," he passed Sukkot, and the large Island of Sai, and reached Tinara, a place situated between four hundred and thirty and four hundred and hfty miles south of Aswan. The whole journey from Aswan to Tinara and back occupied only thirty-five days. On his return to Egypt, Burckhardt lived at Esna, and continued to wear his usual disguise of a poor Muhammadan trader. Whilst here he determined to join one of the Sennaar caravans which started from Daraw, a town about twenty miles north of Aswan, and to travel across the Nubian desert to the east of the Nile, and to visit the Astaboras River, (i.e., the modern Atbara). After much waiting, and many disappointments, Burckhardt succeeded in leaving Daraw on March 2nd, 1814, and he crossed the Nubian desert by much the same route as that by which Bruce returned from Abyssinia about fifty years before. He halted at Berber on the Nile, and at Ad-Damar, two days further to the south, and at Shendi, the principal market for the slave-traders who journeyed between Egypt and Sennaar, and between Egypt and Dar Fur and Kordofan. From Shendi he followed the course of the Atbara river for about one hundred and twenty miles, and reached Koz-Ragab, whence he departed to Taka, or Kasala ; he had intended to cross the mountains and to proceed to Masawa on the Abyssinian sea-coast. But this he found to be impossible, and he therefore left Taka for Sawakin, which he reached in thirteen days.

From Sawakin he went to Jidda, where he arrived on August 14th, and from Jidda to Tayf, where he spent the month of Ramadan, and met the Pasha of Egypt, Muhammad All, who had known him in Cairo. From Tayf he went to Mekka, where he spent the months of September, October, and November, and on the 25th of the last-named month 31
