THE EGYPTIAN SUDAN second Lera .... Each of these eight gods is armed with two knives. It is interesting to note that we have in the ram-god Kenufi the late equivalent of Khnemu, Khnoubis, Khnoumis, and in his name the original of the forms Khneph, Khnouphis, &c.

On the north wall are reliefs of considerable interest. Here we see the king seated on the usual lion-throne, by the side of which are laid nine bows, to indicate his sovereignty over the nine Sudani tribes that fought with bows and arrows ; close by is his favourite hunting dog. Behind him stand two priestesses, each holding a sistrum, and one pouring out a libation; they are probably intended to represent his queen and his daughter.

Before him are sculptured the following : First Register. The Judgment Scene in the Hall of Osiris, with figures of the fortytwo " Assessors." Outside the hall are four bulls arranged as in reliefs of the Ptolemaic Period. Second Register, i. A priest standing by a pillar set up before a building which supports a shrine. On one side is the Bennu bird %, and on the other Horus-Ra . This scene is the vignette of the XLVTIth Chapter of the Book of the Dead according to the Saite Recension ; it illustrates the text entitled, " The Chapter of not allowing the seat and abode of a man to be taken away from him in the Other World." 2.
