by Lord Cromer, who assisted me in every possible way, and who

with his strong hand brushed aside all obstacles. From Lord

Kitchener and his successor, Sir Reginald Wingate, I have at all

times received ready and effective help ; indeed without their

assistance it would have been impossible for a European to live in

the Sudan, much less to travel or to work there. Though

harassed by work and worry of all kinds by day and by night, they,

nevertheless, found time to make the necessary arrangements for

carrying out the excavations, and continued to take a keen interest

n their progress. Their officers everywhere showed me much

personal kindness, and their unselfish hospitality will ever be to me a pleasant memory.

A word of praise is due to Messrs. Gilbert & Rivington and

their staff for the care taken in printing this book.
