Mariette at once caused steps to be taken for the removal of the stelae, and the Mudir of Dongola was ordered to place them on a raft and send them to Cairo ; their transport was effected with difficulty, and they did not arrive at Bulak until the end of 1864.

greatest care by Lepsius and his colleagues, it is astonishing that five such large monuments were overlooked. With this fact in mind we searched the ruins of Piankhi's temple with the greatest care, and though many scores of tons of sand and stone were removed in the process, the labour spent was in vain.

VIII. A little to the north of Piankhi's temple a portion of the plain is littered with fragments of pottery, stone, and bricks, but there is nothing left which serves to show what class of buildings Descriptions and translations of ihc inscriptions on these stelae are given in the second volume of this work.
