366 APPENDIX V.

Hypsometrical observations considerably reduce these altitudes.

Foweira, 3432 ft. (Emin), 3542 ft. (Lt. Baker).

Mruli, 3513 ft. (Emin).

We are inclined to accept 3950 ft. as the altitude of Mruli, and 3760 ft. as that of Foweira.

As respects G-ondokoro we have thought it best to retain the altitude assigned to it by Dr. Hann, viz.

1526 feet or 465 metres, as numerous published altitudes are dependent upon it. Our own computations have yielded the following results : Gondokoro (Dovyak) 1507 feet.

(Capt. Watson) .. .. 1443 Lado (Dr. Emm Bey) 1618 In conclusion, we give a list of altitudes calculated by Dr. Zoppritz from aneroid observations made daily at 6 A.M., and published in Petermann's ' Mittheilungen.' As far as the "village on the Tonj," the altitudes are referred to Lado, where corresponding observations were taken by Dr. Emin. The heights beyond that place were referred by Dr. Zoppritz to the average of the mean monthly pressures at Lado and Khartoum, but we have amended his results so as to give Dara a height of 495 m. (as determined by Colonel Mason), instead of the 565 m. resulting from the method of computation referred to.
