sung out the officer of the watch about
eleven o'clock on the morning of June 24, 1876, as
the mail steamer Putidlla was ploughing her way
through the Indian Ocean. All eyes were at once
turned eagerly to the west, where upon the distant
horizon was a dim grey line which was said to be
the island of Zanzibar. Soon the island of Pemba
was sighted, and, as the day wore on, the more
prominent features were gradually made out ; then
the cocoanut palms could be distinguished, and the
white line of surf which marked the coral reefs on
which the ocean billows break their force. An hour
