Arabic became the official language after the advent of Islam in West Africa in the year 60 AH, and Arab-Islamic culture became the basis of civilization and prosperity. However, European colonialism worked to erase Arab-Islamic culture in the countries of West Sudan, and imposed French and English instead of Arabic.
