He was appointed governor of Harar, through which most of the empire's trade with the outside world passed. Ras Makonnen was also the grandson of Emperor Sahle Selassie.

He was the cousin of Emperor Menelik and one of his closest and most loyal people.

Little is known about his mother, Empress Taytu, except that she descended from a Muslim family from the Wollo region. She married Makonnen in 1883 after he divorced his first wife, the mother of his half-brother, Yelma. All her children were stillborn or died in infancy, and she herself died less than two years after the birth of Taytu, and she had no other children.
