Gordon departed, and could not leave Sudan, so he fell victim to politics with those who went with the Egyptian-Sudanese Empire which they destroyed. When Gordon's diaries were found and returned to his family, they claimed from them the instructions that exposed the policy, so those diaries were printed, and they contained five blank pages. The English government tried to save Gordon by extending the siege of Khartoum, so they sent a campaign led by Lord Wolseley, and the orders issued to him stated, "The purpose is to save Gordon and Stewart. Once this is achieved, no other actions are permissible." So Wolseley used the Egyptian army and 99,000 of the English army and 9,000 Nile boats. The campaign began on September 27, 1884, and advanced. However, Khartoum fell on January 26, 1885, and Sir Charles Wilson arrived there. Abu Borden at noon on January 28. When he learned the news, he turned back to Lord Wolseley, who had embarked his campaign to Egypt. Thus, the withdrawal of the Egyptians from Sudan was completed. Muhammad Ahmad did not live long after the fall of Khartoum, only 5 months, and died on June 14, 1885. He was succeeded by Abdullah al-Ta'aishi, from whom the Egyptian army retook Sudan in 1898, i.e., after 16 years during which fighting never ceased for a single day between the Egyptians and the Sudanese rebels on the borders. And Pasha Abd al-Qadir did not ask them to suppress the rebellion for half of what they offered Pasha Herbert, nor a tenth of what Egypt bore in burdens afterwards to regain it. It was not divided for Egypt. The intense engagements between the Egyptian army and the Sudanese rebels were 24 engagements, and the engagements to retake Sudan were 11 engagements. The subsidy that Egypt provides to Sudan after its recapture is 460,000 pounds per year, excluding the army, steamers, and officials who receive their salaries from the Egyptian treasury. However, the Shura Council decides when paying funds, "Since Sudan is an inseparable part of Egypt, it agrees to pay the sum of X."
