65 -Its shape is a reservoir for storing water and its sustenance, but its construction does not suffice for the necessary works to control water at the sources of the Nile in the great lakes, in order to solve the problem of summer irrigation for the entire Egyptian territory, when all arable land is utilized. The course of the Nile where this dam is to be built has been sounded and a solid type was found at a moderate depth. The detailed drawings have not been completed yet, but it is expected that the expenses of this work will be less than one million pounds.

15 - New Irrigation Works (1) Middle Western Drainage Project The amount excavated by hand for the repair of drains during the year reached 137,340 cubic meters. Almost all of this earth was obtained without the drains achieving the required depth. What will be excavated thereafter will be underwater and will be excavated by dredgers, and the cost per meter of excavation will be less than the cost of hand excavation. The dredgers currently in use, which are 13 in number, completed the excavation of 592,000 cubic meters during the year. Work is progressing well on the construction of the sluices, which include large culverts under the Arwi drain and a siphon from the Tira drain to this drain. Good progress has been made. A narrow gauge Delta railway line has been constructed from parallel to Al-Hamoul (Al-Sallabib) to Khana, where the barrages are to be erected. This line was opened last June. Work is underway on laying reinforced concrete pipes in all drains and canals, along with excavation. The necessary methods for irrigating the lands where the drains are being excavated for drainage are now being considered, so that irrigation can be improved immediately after the drains are completed.
