It is from the land of Masufa and Libta, and it is the first of the desert ports. From there to Sijilmasa are 13 stages, and from there to Nul are 57 stages. This city is not large, but it is civilized. Its people wear woolen garments, which they call in their language "al-adawar". This is an account of some who entered this city: if a woman there reaches forty years of age and is unmarried, she offers herself to any man who desires her. She does not refuse anyone who wants her. This city is called "Azfi" in Berber and "Fudkhum" in Jinniya. Whoever wishes to enter the lands of Sila, Takrur, and the lands of the Sudan must pass through this city. As for the city of Sijilmasa, it is a large city with many inhabitants, a destination for those arriving and departing, with abundant greenery and gardens, beautiful in appearance and splendor. It has no equal, except for its connected palaces and buildings along a river with abundant water that flows to it from the east, from the desert. In the summer, it increases like the Nile, and the farmers of Egypt irrigate their lands with its water according to what they plant. Their cultivation yields abundant and known harvests. In some years of great floods, with the continuous flow of the river, what they harvested in the previous year grows without needing to be sown again. In most years, when the river recedes, they sow on those lands, harvest when it ripens, and leave the roots for the following year. This grows without the need for new seeds. Al-Tahwili narrated that the sowing there is annual, and the harvest is in every year for up to seven years. However, the sown crop changes its state until it becomes something between a bitter gourd and barley. This crop is called "Yazdan Tiru". Between them are many palm trees and various types of dates, none of which resemble each other. Their ripe fruit is called "al-Barnī", and it is very green.
