Toledo, and it extended before it four miles, and it is entered by the Munda and the Jazr. It is a beautiful city, extended along the river, and it has a strong wall and citadel. In the middle of the city is a hammam, hot in winter and summer. And Lisbon is on the river of the Dark Sea, and on the bank of the river, to its south, opposite the city of Lisbon, is a good mine. It is so named because at the entrance to the sea, gold and electrum are called out there. When winter comes, the people of that land go to this fortress and work the mine until the end of winter. It is one of the wonders of the earth, and we have seen it with our own eyes. From the city of Lisbon, the Maghribis set out on a voyage into the Sea of Darkness to discover what was in it and where it ended, as we have previously mentioned. And they have in the city of Lisbon, in a place called Darb al-Mu'arrabin, a street named after them, to last forever. This is because they gathered, men all of them cousins, and built a ship, and loaded it with water, meaning enough for them for months. Then they entered the sea with the first east wind, and sailed for eleven days. They reached the Sea of Galilith, with its foul smells, its large heads, and its guiding signs. They stopped at a place called Al-Fazz, and their sheep were scattered in another place. They sailed in the sea towards the south for ten days, and they came out to the Island of the Sheep, and there were sheep there that no one could count or gather, and they were grazing without a shepherd or a herdsman. They intended to go to the island, landed there, found a flowing spring, and on it a tree. They took those sheep and slaughtered them, and found their meat so bitter that no one could eat it. They took some of their skins and sailed for ten days towards another island that appeared to them. They looked at it and saw it was inhabited and cultivated. They intended to go to it and see what was in it. It was not long before they were surrounded by a large number of people. They were captured and brought in their ship to a city on the coast. They landed there and saw men with disheveled hair and beards.
