In the year 740, the Caliph learned of his son's intentions and ordered him to be punished and reprimanded in front of the people. On Wednesday, the fourth of Shawwal of the mentioned year, Al-Mutawakkil was found dead in his bed in the middle of the night by a Turkish guard named Bugha the Younger, at the instigation of Al-Muntasir.
