He said, "If he says, 'Who is the son of Mu'awiya?' and 'Who is the son of Mu'awiya? His sword then returned, and he did not reach the latter." The Egyptians called to him from the sides of the mosque, "Justice, justice!" And he descended and appointed Uthman ibn Affan as governor of Alexandria in the year 120 AH. And Uthman died in Fustat in Dhu al-Hijjah in the year 44 AH. And his reign was a full year. So Mu'awiya appointed Uqba ibn Amir ibn Abs al-Muhini in his place and gave him his salary and his land tax. And Uqba was a reciter, a jurist, a scholar, a poet, and had prestige and companionship and precedence, but he was not satisfied with politics and good management. So Mu'awiya appointed Maslama ibn Mukhallad ibn Samit al-Ansari in his place. He was one of the nobles of Medina, and he ordered him to do so. Mu'awiya sent his order to Uqba to go to Rhodes by sea in Rabi' al-Awwal in the year 49 AH. So Maslama arrived and accompanied Uqba to Alexandria, not knowing his intention. When he set out, Maslama took over the throne of his emirate. Uqba heard of this and said, "Exile and strangeness." His reign was three months, or two years and three months. And Maslama began to implement the judgments and collect the salaries and the land tax. And his raids on land and sea continued. He conquered the West with armies, fortified the city of Qayrawan, and established fortifications and strongholds, and stationed a garrison there. In the year 50 AH, Mu'awiya sent a large army with Sufyan ibn Awf to Constantinople. They penetrated the lands of the Romans and besieged Constantinople. In this army were Ibn Abbas, Amr ibn al-Zubayr, and Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari died during the siege and was buried near its walls. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari witnessed the Battle of Badr with the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Battle of Siffin and other wars. In the year 51 AH, during his emirate, the Romans landed at Barqa and killed Wardan, the freedman of Amr ibn al-As, along with a group of Muslims. And Maslama began to build minarets for mosques, and he was the first to establish minarets for mosques and congregational mosques. In the year 52 AH, Maslama ibn Mukhallad went to Alexandria and appointed Ubayd Allah ibn Sa'id as his deputy in Egypt. In this year, Mu'awiya died in Damascus on the first of Rajab.
