He was struck by a blow, and then he uttered nothing but "There is no god but Allah" until he passed away, may Allah be pleased with him. As for Al-Barrak, he lunged at Mu'awiyah that night and struck him with his sword. It fell on Mu'awiyah's thigh, and Al-Barrak held him. Mu'awiyah said to him, "Rejoice, do not kill me." He said, "If I say that my companion killed Ali tonight." Mu'awiyah said, "Perhaps he was not able to." He said, "Ali had a coat of mail protecting him, so Mu'awiyah killed him." As for Marwan bin Bakr, he sat that night with Amr bin Al-Aas, and Amr did not go out to prayer. He had ordered Kharijah bin Abi Habibah, his chief of police, to lead the people in prayer. Kharijah went out to lead the people in prayer, and Marwan bin Bakr attacked him, thinking he was Amr bin Al-Aas, and killed him. The people took him and brought him to Marwan, who asked, "Who is this?" They said, "Kharijah." Marwan said, "I wanted Amr, and Allah willed Kharijah." When Ali died, Abd al-Rahman bin Muljam was brought out from Egypt, and Abdullah bin Ja'far cut off his leg, then his arm, and then his other leg. The Muradi, whose hands were cut off, was the worst of creation. A blow from someone close, who intended nothing but evil. I remember him one day, and I consider him the most fulfilled of creation in the balance of Allah. Sixty-three, and it is said sixty-five. And there was a difference of opinion regarding the age of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. It was said he was fifty-nine, and it was said fifty-five. His caliphate lasted for five years minus three months. His assassination was on the morning of the seventeenth of Ramadan in the year forty. There was a difference of opinion regarding the location of his grave. It was said he was buried near the mosque in Kufa, and it was said near the palace of the emirate. It was said his son Al-Hasan moved him to his city and buried him in Al-Baqi' near the grave of his wife Fatima, may Allah be pleased with them. The most authentic, and what Ibn Al-Athir and others preferred, is that his grave is the one famous in Najaf, and it is the one visited today. The first wife Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, married was Fatima, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. He did not marry anyone else during her lifetime, and he had children from her: Al-Hasan, Al-Hussein, and Hassan, who died young, and Zainab, and Umm Kulthum, whom Umar bin Al-Khattab married. Then, after Fatima's death, he married Umm Al-Banin, the daughter of Hizam Al-Kilabiyah, and he had children from her: Al-Abbas, Ja'far, Abdullah, and Uthman. These four were killed with their brother. He married Umm Habibah, daughter of Mas'ud bin Khalid Al-Lahshali Al-Qurashi, and he had children from her: Abdullah and Abu Bakr, who were also killed with Al-Hussein. He married Umm Al-Walid, daughter of Ubayy bin Ka'b, and he had children from her: Al-Asghar and Yahya. And he had children from the captives whom Khalid bin Al-Walid raided in Yemen. And the aforementioned Samar lived to be eighty years old. And he had children from his concubines. And he had offspring. And he also married.
