Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, and with him two men I do not know. He called him and asked him. He said, "By God, you did not lie. I entered upon him intending to kill him, but I remembered my father, so I left him, and there is no god but Allah." As for Marwan, he fled with his children to Mu'awiyah in Sham. He sent the shirt of 'Uthman, dyed with blood, to Sham, along with the fingers of Nailah, his wife, which were cut off while she defended him. Mu'awiyah displayed the shirt and the fingers in the mosque of Damascus and incited the people to demand the blood of 'Uthman. The greatest sedition in Islam erupted because of his murder. The Caliphate departed from Medina and never returned to it. Following this were the Battle of Siffin and the Battle of Al-Jamal, and between the Muslims, wars and seditions whose sparks are still flying to this day. He was pious, truthful, and generous. He spent much of his wealth in the cause of Allah before assuming the Caliphate. He is the one who equipped half the army on the Day of Hardship with his wealth, and bought the well of Ruma, and made its water available to travelers. On the day of the expedition to Tabuk, he spent a thousand dinars and donated three hundred camels with their saddles and coverings. He bought the house of the Prophet and expanded the Sacred Mosque with it. When he assumed the Caliphate, he ordered the stripping of the doors of the Haram and led prayers in the mosque and expanded the mosque. He ordered the collection of manuscripts and their copying, with copies to be sent to every region of the Muslim lands. The sorrowful mourned his demise. Many of the Companions and others saw him, including the saying of Hassan ibn Thabit, the poet of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "You left the raiding of the roads behind you, and you raided us near Qayr Juhd. What a bad guidance for the Muslims is your guidance, and what a bad deed for the deliberate sinner. They are slaughtered at the door of the mosque, the companions of the Prophet in the evening." 'Uthman was of medium height, with a handsome face, a scar from smallpox on his face, a thick beard, dark-skinned, bald, and he used to dye his beard. He was the father-in-law of two daughters of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and for this reason he was called Dhu al-Nourayn (the possessor of two lights). The Caliphate of Ali ibn Abi Talib. And the name of Abi Talib is Abd Manaf ibn Abd al-Muttalib, the grandfather of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him. And Ali's mother is Fatima bint Asad ibn Hashim, so he is a Hashimite, son of Hashimites. He was pledged allegiance as Caliph on the day 'Uthman was killed. There is disagreement about how he was pledged allegiance. It was said that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, gathered, including Talhah and Zubayr. They came to Ali and said to him, "We have no one to choose for us in this matter. Whom do you choose?" He said, "I do not choose anyone but you." They hesitated and returned to him several times, saying, "We do not choose anyone but you."
