Facsimile · p. 22
Do not be arrogant, nor fear the power and greatness of Him who raised the heavens and bestowed the crown and the throne of sovereignty upon the Shah, who imprisons and binds the jinn. And now you have come against His greatness.
Cease this stubbornness, for there is no benefit in your embarking on this devastating war with the Kisra. Cease your stubbornness. Tell me, who is your Sultan, who are you, what is your religion, and what path are you following? And you attribute your power, your commanders, and your army to yourselves, barefoot and naked, living on a handful of dates. You possess no wealth, no prosperity, no provisions, nor any equipment. So you have come to our lands, seeking to seize what is ours. The throne and the seat of kingship are not yours, but the seat of kingship, the crown, and prosperity are ours.
And if our king, Rustam, sat on the throne of kingship with wealth equal to the heads of the Arabs, in dinars, it would not be accounted for in his treasury. He has two thousand and ten types of hunting dogs, falcons, and cheetahs, all with golden collars and chains. When he goes hunting, he goes alone into the desert. Do you not learn? Do you hope to snatch the crown from the Kisra with these ugly faces and this appearance? Have you no sense? How coarse are your natures! Woe to time and to events! Woe to the Arabs when they covet the throne of the Kisra. If a person desires something far-fetched, there is no doubt that his request is a form of madness. We have many brave men, endowed with knowledge and wisdom, who have traveled the earth and observed the conditions of the entire world. So tell me, what do you want, what is your demand, and on whose authority do you seek to take the throne of kingship from the Kisra? I have already sent a messenger to His Majesty the Shah to present him with my wishes. Do not prolong the war with this great king, for its consequences for you will be regret and defeat. Know that this king is none other than Khosrow Anushirvan, the just king, the king from generation to generation, whose justice made the old man fear the young. And the current king follows the path of his grandfather in justice and benevolence. He has no equal among kings, nor any likeness. So do not be hateful to the world by your actions, nor be an embodiment of ugliness in your religion. And ponder this letter of mine, filled with admonitions and advice, and look at it with the eye of insight, and do not close your eyes to it, nor your ears. After Rustam sealed this letter, he handed it to Firuz Shapur to deliver to Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas. This valiant hero set out with Sa'd, accompanied by a group of the most prominent Persians, all wearing armor. When Sa'd learned of the arrival of a messenger from Rustam, he prepared his army and his commander, Rustam, and the Shah of the Khazars. He continued... and their lands. He replied that we have two swords and two shields. Sa'd said that men do not boast...
