He was born three years after the Year of the Elephant. His caliphate lasted two years, three months, and ten days, or twenty days according to some. His wife, Umm Ayman bint 'Amis, washed him. He was carried on the same bier that carried the Messenger of God (peace be upon him). He prayed in the mosque of the Messenger of God. He was buried next to the Messenger of God (peace be upon him), with his head at the shoulder of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him). He was of good stature, light of foot, with a handsome face, large eyes, a broad forehead, a thick beard, dyed with henna and khattam.
Mention of the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab ibn Nufayl ibn Abd al-Uzza (may God be pleased with him).
He was appointed to the caliphate on the day Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may God be pleased with him) died. In his first sermon, he said: "O people, by God, there is no one among you weaker in my eyes than the strong until I take the right from him, and no one stronger in my eyes than the weak until I give him his right." The first thing he did was to dismiss Khalid ibn al-Walid from the command and appoint Abu Ubaidah to the army in al-Sham. He sent a letter to them, and he was the first to be called "Commander of the Faithful." Abu Bakr used to address him as the successor of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him). Then Abu Ubaidah marched and besieged Damascus. The siege was from the direction of Bab al-Jabiyah, and they descended from the direction of Bab Tumah and Bab Sharqi. Amr ibn al-As descended from another direction, and they besieged it for nearly seventy nights. Khalid conquered what was in his direction by the sword. The people of Damascus surrendered and offered tribute to Abu Ubaidah from the other side, and they opened the gate for him. He entered, and the Muslims entered with Khalid in the middle of the city. Abu Ubaidah sent the conquest to Umar. In his days, Iraq was conquered. Then the year entered.
In it, Abu Quhafah died in Muharram. Umar built Basra, and it was said that in the year of the death of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, he was ninety-seven years old. His death occurred after the death of his father, Abu Bakr.
The year 101 entered. In it, Homs was conquered after Damascus, after a long siege, until the Romans sought peace. Abu Ubaidah made peace with them on the same terms as the people of Damascus. Then he marched to Hamah. The judge, Kamal al-Din ibn Wasil, in the history from which we have نقل this, said that Hamah was a great city in the time of David and Solomon, peace be upon them. He said that he found its mention in the news of David and Solomon in the book of Kings, which is in the hands of the Jews. It was also in the time of the Greeks, but in the time of the conquests and before it was small. It was the seat of these lands, and Qasr Shizir, and they were part of the work of Misr.
And Abraham the Hebrew mentioned them in his poem, "Is there any longing after what was once..." and he says: "O you who are..."
