The strong alliance that united Abdullah Jamaa, who took the name Jamaa from his ability to gather Arab tribes under his leadership and command, and Amara or Amira Dongus. This is because Arabs are known to be content with cooperation among themselves. So how could an alliance have been formed between Amara, if he was from the Shawai, or between Amara, if he was a descendant of the Berber kings of Bornu? From this, there is no room for doubt that the Funj were Umayyad Arab tribes who intermarried with local tribes, and among them was the generation that overthrew Alwa in cooperation with the Arabs of Qawasim. From this, all the opinions mentioned by Arkell, Baer, James Bruce, or others who have transmitted the ethnic origins of the Funj, or by contemporary historians who followed their path, have no connection to the truth. The subject does not allow for a lengthy explanation here, as this would lead us into archaeological and anthropological studies that we are far from in this research. This is because their descent from the East, in the region extending from the Nile eastward to the Red Sea westward, is natural due to the deep roots connecting these Nile regions with the eastern regions close to the Arabian Peninsula. From here, the Funj descended from the East, from the region that lies at the crossroads between the Nile Basin and Ethiopia, or they came from Egypt from the north after the killing of Marwan bin Muhammad, the last of the Umayyad caliphs. This is the accepted and sound opinion that can be adopted. And that an Arab Islamic principality had been established in this eastern region, whose capital was, as I mentioned before, in the region of Meroe. And its sphere of influence extended westward to the edges of the Jazeera. Then an alliance was formed between this growing Arab Islamic principality and the Arabs who migrated and multiplied in the Kingdom of Alwa, and their influence reached a significant level of power by the end of the 15th century AD, the 9th Hijri century. This alliance, which preceded the alliance of Abdullah Jamaa and Amara Dongus, was for Islamic necessities. It was an alliance for jihad in the path of Islam and for the spread of Arab culture.
