They remained without asking about them until they had stayed. The long time without a guide almost killed them.
So they were forced to return from where they came. It appears from this that (King Amteseh) was a hypocrite who looked to his own interests and used all deceit and treachery on the path to achieving them. He had embraced Islam before he was convinced of Gordon's Christianity. When he learned that he was Christian, he abandoned his initial desire and adopted Christianity as his religion. Therefore, he had both the Egyptian and the English flags. If someone from the English came, he would claim to be subject to the authority of the English and raise the English flag. If someone came from the Serbs, he would raise the Egyptian flag under the pretext that he was loyal to the Egyptian government. But in the end, his desire was always to raise the English flag. Therefore, Colonel Gordon left him as he was and considered (Bahr el Ghazal Province) the furthest limit of Egyptian authority. This city was the center of the province named after it. The first Qaimaqam appointed to it was Ibrahim Bey, who was from the Sudan. And his son was known as Ibn Juma'a. After the establishment of the province on this basis, we returned to the center of (Ladoh). Our journey was safe. The people of Ladoh rejoiced greatly at our arrival, especially because we had conquered many lands, so that their province became the capital of a vast region with many resources and trade. They hoped that it would have a great and prosperous future, like the great kingdoms. And these people were freed from the oppressive rule of the merchants, the owners of the (companies). A few days after our arrival in Ladoh, news came from (Atok) which is a region between it and (Kondokoro), a distance of twelve days. That Mr. Agd and a group of other merchants were suffering greatly from the slave trade.
