"We are provided for and await our appointed time," said Sheikh Abd al-Rahman Kaila. Sheikh Badawi's hospitality was for the common folk: a satisfying morsel of *kisra* in the *baram*, leavened dough with water on top like broth. For special guests, there was a slaughter of every animal. In former times, people would travel during the day. Abu Arif al-Ja'ali said, "We were students studying the Quran in the *khalwas* of Sheikh Badawi. We had *jallaba* (traders) between Maghrib and Isha. There were a hundred donkeys, not counting the *Muzammil* (a type of cloth), and horses. We said, 'Tonight, the gatekeepers will sleep soundly due to the abundance of guests.'" A little after Isha, I heard the *jallaba* people shouting at the dogs, throwing scraps to them. The gatekeeper shouted, "Hungry ones!" Ibrahim al-Humaili said, "Traders came between Maghrib and Isha, filling the horizon. I swear by divorce, the traders cannot be accommodated. Where is their water? Where is their firewood? Where are their servants?" I prayed Isha with the Sheikh and went to sleep with my wife. I was a groom. I slept and woke up in the middle of the night, terrified of breaking my oath. I heard al-Zein, the gatekeeper's son, shouting to the Sheikh's family, "Yabakhit! Yasa'id! Bring the *iftar* for the poor traders!" The poor, the needy, and the travelers, about sixty of them, were sleeping in the open. I ran to the traders, and they were shouting. I ran to the dogs for scraps and came to the poor in the open. I put my hand in the *baram* with them. I found the *kisra* from its leavening like an *ardib* (a measure), and the water on top like broth. I heard the Sheikh say, "And to God is the return." From al-Halwa, he cleared his throat and said, "O Ibrahim!" I said, "My master." He said, "My son, what is your wife doing back?" This is Mount Qaf, the land of the الامر (command). It is from God and the Messenger (peace be upon him) and Sheikh Abd al-Qadir. So my wife returned. It is narrated that a man of integrity and dignity, a *marqub* (a type of person, possibly a mystic or holy man) from Asia, was sought by his kinsmen. They found him in the house of fire and killed him. The Sheikh said to the killer, "You kill and seek refuge? By God, the refuge is in the house of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Sheikh Abd al-Qadir. O Saluqi, if the evil does not leave your head..." Aman, son of Taj al-Din al-Bahari, it is said that the man suffered from a disease in his head, and blood flowed from him. A *marqub* came and killed a man from the *Sadaqab* during the time of Sheikh al-Junaid. They said, "Let us leave him." Sheikh al-Junaid said to them, "Go away, do not go to him." Sheikh Badawi is a man accepted by his Lord. They said to him, "Sheikh Badawi, our *hawara* (a type of person, possibly a follower or disciple) will protect our blood." So al-Zein, son of the Sheikh, got up, took a group, and traveled to the *marqub*. When they approached the village, they hid in a place and sent a messenger to inform them of his sleeping place. The man came and found them in the circle of *dhikr* (remembrance of God). He waited until they finished the *dhikr* and knew his location and time. He went to his companions and informed them. They mounted, seeking him. They traveled until morning. They found themselves in the open plain of al-Mandara, in the village of Umm Jabi. Sheikh al-Junaid said to them, "If he does not want to, he will throw you behind Mount Qaf." And among the miracles of Sheikh Badawi is that King Abd al-Salam, a *marqub* from Sar, and King...
